Our commitment
Every student should be able to learn with Ekadem, whatever device, assistive technology or way of reading they use. Our target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the standard behind EN 301 549 (European public-sector and European Accessibility Act procurement) and Section 508 in the United States. Where a school’s procurement requires a specific standard, the signed Order Form and conformance report identify the exact commitment.
Built in for everyone
- Keyboard. Every screen can be used without a mouse, with a visible focus outline, a “Skip to main content” link and logical tab order. Dialogs keep focus inside them, close with Escape and return you to where you were.
- Screen readers. Screens use headings, landmarks and labelled controls. Answer feedback, timers, saving, uploads and other changes are announced, and right and wrong answers never rely on colour alone.
- Exercises without dragging. Matching, ordering, sorting and labelling exercises have click- and keyboard-based alternatives to drag and drop.
- Your device settings. Ekadem follows your device’s reduce-motion, dark-mode and Windows contrast-theme settings, and works with browser zoom up to 400% and larger browser text sizes.
- Languages. The interface is available in 58 languages, including right-to-left layouts for Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu, and the page language is set for screen readers and translation tools.
- Time. Activities have no time limit unless a teacher sets one. Timers announce when time is running out, and extra time can be given to individual students.
Accessibility settings for every user
Open your account menu, then Accessibility, to change these. They follow you to any device you sign in on.
- Text size up to 150%, scaling text and spacing together.
- Reading font: Atkinson Hyperlegible, designed for low-vision readers, or OpenDyslexic. Code and maths keep their own fonts.
- Text spacing: taller lines and wider letter, word and paragraph spacing at the WCAG 1.4.12 values.
- High contrast in light and dark themes.
- Colour-safe feedback: blue and orange with ✓ and ✕ marks instead of green and red, for colour-blind students.
- Underline links, strong focus outline and reduce motion (no animations, celebrations or smooth scrolling).
- Read aloud: a Listen button on questions and on any text you select (or Alt+Shift+L). It uses the voices on your own device, so nothing you read is sent to Ekadem or an AI service; where the browser offers on-device voices, those are chosen first.
- Reading guide: shades the screen above and below the pointer to help keep your place.
- Sound effects and vibration can be switched off.
Learning supports teachers can assign
From a student’s profile, a teacher or school administrator can give extra time (up to double) on timed activities and turn on read aloud, the reading guide, text spacing, a reading font, colour-safe feedback or reduced motion for that student. Supports apply on every device the student uses, and the student can’t switch them off while they are assigned. In a school, only the student’s own teachers and administrators who manage people can see or change them, and every change is recorded in the school’s audit log. Supports are included in the student’s data export.
Known limitations
We are working on these and offer a workaround on request:
- Freehand drawing, whiteboards and the visual mind-map editor need a pointer. Drawing activities can be swapped for a writing or upload activity by the teacher; mind maps have a text outline for screen readers.
- Uploaded files (PDFs, slides, scans) are only as accessible as their source. Teachers should upload tagged documents with real text, or add a description.
- Automatically generated images and diagrams may have short or generic descriptions.
- Some secondary text in the default light theme is lighter than the 4.5:1 contrast ratio. Turn on High contrast for full-contrast text.
- Code editors capture the Tab key while you type. Press Escape and then Tab (or Ctrl+M in the larger editor) to move on.
How we test
Need another format or a workaround?
Email hello@ekadem.com with the page or feature, the assistive technology and browser you use, what you were trying to do and the format or accommodation that would help. Please don’t include student records you don’t need to. We acknowledge every request and offer a reasonable accessible route while we fix the issue.
School responsibilities
Schools should test Ekadem with the needs of their learners, use accessible source material, provide accommodations and human alternatives, and avoid assigning an AI or media feature a learner cannot access. Ekadem supports accessibility due diligence and remediation planning under the school agreement.
